What's happening this weekend (26 - 28 June)

So maybe you forgot your tent and weren't one of the 180,000 who got tickets to Glastonbury this weekend? Did you see the Killers, Neil Young or Bruce Springsteen perform at the Hard Rock Calling concert just 30 minutes walk away from Astor in Hyde Park? Well probably not - so what's left for you you to do this weekend?

This is London - so if you're bored then you're just not trying!

If you are looking for more of a smaller music scene - check out Camden - it's only a couple of stops on the tube from Astor (Nothern line) and there are night buses to get you home. There are some great clubs and pubs here - check out the Electric Ballroom although there are a number of other places - many have live music (Bowling for Soup is playing next week for example at one venue). Visit http://www.myvillage.com/camden/bars&Music.htm for listings.

Want some culture? In Georgia the lottery pays for HOPE - in the UK it contributes to many charities - but the lottery also pays for your entrance into all the free museums! Many of you have seen the Tate Modern - how about the Tate Britain - home of British art from 1500 to the present? Pimlico on the Victoria line is your closest tube. Visit http://www.tate.org.uk/britain/ for more info.

You ride it everyday -but want to know how it works and get some great souvenirs? The London Transport Museum in Covent Garden re-opened last year after a long renovation. Even if you don't tour the museum visit the shop (you don't need to pay to visit the shop!) for some really unique souvenirs especially of the posters (or postcards) that you see on the tube.

Food. So your cooking's not your mothers? Well - while you might have a hard time finding good ol' southern cooking in London, there's no better time to try something new! British food 20 or 30 years ago used to be the ridicule of the world. Now London is home to everything (except maybe grits!). Gordon Ramsey of Hell's Kitchen fame has a number of really pricey restuarants here - but he's recently opened a couple of pubs in London also serving food which are cheaper - http://www.gordonramsay.com/pubs/

The British tradition is to go for Indian once you get the munchies after an evening out - it is usually good value for money and the food doesn't have to be spicy - much like the national dish of Britain which is chicken tikka masala. Check back here and go with one of the faculty to a local Indian restaurant where they will give you suggestions on what to eat.

You've been here just over a week now - and you must have collectively taken thousands of photos! We'll be having a photo contest towards the end of the program - so start picking out some of your favorites and win a prize! We may even publish the winners in next year's brochure!

Please let us know if you have any top-tips of any type that we can share - post as comments or email usg@studybritain.org
